What is Street Naming & Numbering?
London Borough Of Redbridge is responsible for
the naming and numbering of new or existing streets and buildings
within the borough boundaries. This is a legal requirement under
Part II of The London Building Acts (Amendment) Act 1939.
Where a development, redevelopment or
conversion has the effect of changing the number of units for
residential, retail, industrial or leisure purposes, it will
require the allocation of an official postal address. Equally if
you wish to simply alter the name/number of an existing property
you must, by law, make an application to the Council.
New names for streets and buildings go through
a consultation process that can take several weeks. It is therefore
advisable to contact the council at the earliest possible stage of
a development, preferably before building work commences, and
before a development name has been marketed.

Why is it importaint?
Without an approved address occupiers may
experience problems with postal deliveries, utilities connection,
school registration and obtaining credit etc.
Street naming and numbering allows public
service personnel to quickly locate the address they seek. This is
particularly important when doctors, ambulance or fire crew are
called out in an emergency, as any delay caused by confusion over
an address could put lives at risk. Such services increasingly use
satellite navigation systems for guidance, which are fed with
approved addresses.
