Fairtrade Redbridge

Redbridge is a Fairtrade Borough in London, the world’s largest Fairtrade City

In September 2003, a residents’ petition was submitted to the Council, the result of which was that, in November 2004, the Council adopted the Resolution to:  “recognise the work of the Fairtrade Foundation in improving the conditions of farmers and communities in developing countries, and supports the principles promoted by Fairtrade and will work to become a Fairtrade Borough. In doing so, we will work with the Council’s suppliers, contractors and within the community to raise awareness and encourage the promotion and provision of Fairtrade products”.

The Council organised a public meeting inviting residents and stakeholders aWe are Fairtrade Borough logo for Redbridge Councillong with a keen interest in Fairtrade. In April 2005, the local group, Fairtrade Redbridge, was officially born, with the support of the Council, which continues to be represented on the group alongside other community organisations.

The borough gained Fairtrade Borough status in September 2008. The group, which is run by a small group of committed volunteers, continues to work alongside residents, community groups and the Council to further Fairtrade in Redbridge. Meetings take place every 6 weeks or so and are open to anyone with an interest in Fairtrade.

For the Council’s part, it continues to be committed to Fairtrade and:

  • Strives to extend its range of Fairtrade products offered through its internal catering services, servicing all internal and public meetings, canteen and trolley.
  • Provides support to the local group, Fairtrade Redbridge.
  • Increases awareness of Fairtrade amongst its staff, the general public and its partners
  • Supports work in schools and children’s services
  • Organises events, and encourages other local groups to hold events, as part of Fairtrade Fortnight.

Fairtrade is….

An example of trade justice empowering people to lift themselves out of poverty, to be able to pay for basic medical care and for their children to attend school- basic rights we in the UK take for granted. Fairtrade helps to ensure decent working conditions and a better quality of life for the growers. For more information on Fairtrade please visit the Fairtrade Foundation website.
